As mentioned this past Wednesday, I had a rough couple of days. The worst though was definitely Wednesday, which inspired me to write that post to help others who may feel the same. But, as I've reflected on last week, I wanted to provide some straightforward advice for all of you in case you're going through a rough time.
1. Let yourself cry
Simple. Separate yourself if you can so you have a private space to let the tears flow, so the emotions can release and you feel less tension.
2. Make time for rest
Either take a nap or go to bed early. If you're taking a nap, close the shades, turn on a fan or sound machine, and sink into your bed without shame. Before going to bed, crack your window open so your bedroom can get nice and cool for you to bundle underneath your blankets. Spritz some lavender spray on your bed and pillow; do your nightly skincare routine after a hot bath or shower; then tuck yourself in. If you want to cry, continue to do so without shame.
3. Call a friend
Talk it out to someone you trust. It could be your best friend; a parent; a sibling—someone who can lend a shoulder to cry on. Even if you're sobbing like a loon (like I did), it feels so good to get your feelings off your chest. No matter how irrational you feel in spattering out the day's events, the important thing is to let it out. You'll feel better, and that's what you need most.
4. Eat WHATEVER you want
When I'm stressed, I gravitate towards sugar. But if I'm REALLY stressed, I tend to lose my appetite. To make sure I'm at least getting something in my stomach, I'll eat whatever sugar I'm craving that can aid in a temporary relief: cookies, an ice cream sundae, fruit snacks, whatever. If you're having a bad day, give yourself a break and eat what you're craving to help you feel just a bit better.
5. Watch something lighthearted and funny
I did a post on funny videos to watch when you're sad, and I highly recommend it. Let yourself laugh and get out of your head.
Whatever kind of bad day you're having, let it happen and feel through it. To feel sadness is a normal part of being a human; don't give yourself a hard time if you have this feeling all day. There is always tomorrow, remember that.
